Gender-Based Violence Prevention in Southeast Asia

The Joint Programme on Gender-Based Violence Prevention in Southeast Asia is a five-year initiative (2024–2029) led by UN Women and UNFPA, aimed at strengthening regional collaboration, building evidence-based strategies, and enhancing capacities to prevent gender-based violence in the region. Despite progress made to address gender-based violence over the decades, the region continues to face high rates of intimate partner violence, femicide, and other harmful practices. This has been linked to challenges such as limited sustainable and long-term funding, capacity-building gaps in gender-based violence prevention and a lack of evidence-based practices. Through the development of a Southeast Asia Prevention Platform, the initiative will foster partnerships among governments, civil society, and development partners to scale up effective prevention policies and programmes.

Funded by the Australian Government, this joint initiative will invest in research, advocacy, and capacity-building, helping key actors design and implement evidence-based solutions to address the root causes of gender-based violence, including harmful gender norms and systemic inequalities. UN Women and UNFPA will leverage their expertise and regional networks to ensure that prevention efforts are both locally driven and globally informed, empowering women, girls, and other marginalized groups.

Through regional dialogues, technical support, and cross-sector collaboration, the programme will create an enabling environment for long-term gender-based violence prevention. This initiative will mobilize key stakeholders, promote policy innovation, and ensure that gender-based violence prevention remains a priority across the region, contributing to a safer and more equitable future for women and girls in Southeast Asia.
