Synopsis
The UNFPA Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Programme is intended to provide on-the-job training for young professionals who wish to obtain practical experience in development assistance.  It gives them an opportunity to acquire professional knowledge in population projects in a developing country.  
 
Within the context of UNFPA’s seventh Country Programme with the Government of Rwanda, the JPO will work on implementation of UNFPA’s global strategies as they relate to young people in the policy and programme context of Rwanda. The JPO will be responsible for the implementation of programme activities related to adolescents and youth, including but not limited to provision of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, Comprehensive Sexuality Education, youth empowerment, HIV prevention and Gender Based Violence. The JPO will support on-going work on evidence-based analysis and advocacy, policy development, accountability as it relates to adolescents and youth. The JPO will further support the effective implementation of multi-sectoral integrated programmes including joint programmes in the One UN, and the mainstreaming of adolescent and youth in related sector policies and programmes both at the national level and at sub-national level focusing on UNFPA’s focus districts. The JPO will work closely with the programme team within UNFPA, and relevant partners and stakeholders within the One UN, government and non-government partners. Further, the JPO will collaborate with NGO partners, to ensure collaborative, mutually reinforcing and consistent approaches to supporting the government efforts for strengthening adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health including working substantially on convening and supporting the programmes and work plans of the Rwanda One UN Joint Initiatives on Youth. The JPO will also establish strategic partnerships, funding proposals and a young professional mentorship/advisory programme in support of the UNFPA Country Programme in Rwanda.
 
Qualifications and Experience
  • Postgraduate degree in social sciences or related fields with specialized knowledge in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights and HIV prevention 
  • At least 2 years of experience in the health and/or international development sectors. Prior experience in developing countries is an asset.
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of French is an asset
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds
