ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: Media and Communications Branch (MCB), Division of Strategic Communications and Partnerships

Job Purpose

The Editor will be responsible for conceptualizing, developing, writing, editing and acquiring written and visual content for the global UNFPA website and UNFPA digital campaigns. The Editor will also produce op eds for external placement, articles for the internal platform “Voices” and other content for the Media and Communications Branch. 

The Editor ensures that the content is:
accurate, appropriate, timely and engaging
conforms to journalistic standards and UNFPA style / branding
provides regional balance

The Editor must be committed to UNFPA’s values and guiding principles; be able to work on a team; and have excellent judgment both editorially and interpersonally. The incumbent must be able to write and edit fresh, accurate, jargon-free copy on deadline; create visibility for the organization; and exercise leadership.
Organizational Setting
The Editor position is located in the Media and Communications Branch of the Division for Communications and Strategic Partnerships and reports directly to the Online Communications Manager.

Major Activities/Expected Results

Content Development
Works with experts and focal points in relevant branches, and UNFPA offices worldwide to develop and regularly update content for UNFPA websites.
Conceptualizes, writes and collaborates on the production of multimedia resources.
Works closely with UNFPA communications focal points in the field to source human interest stories.
Produces innovative and engaging copy for UNFPA campaigns
Works closely with UNFPA staff  in the field to build stories for the intranet platform “Voices”.
Conceptualizes, writes and collaborates on the production of Op Eds to be placed with the international media
Produces other written content for the Media and Communications Branch 

Building Support for UNFPA’s programmes 
Conceives of innovative ways to tell stories that provide visibility for UNFPA
Responds quickly to major events that could generate traffic to the web site and build interest, visibility and support for the work of UNFPA programmes
Carries out any duties assigned by the Online Communications manager or the Chief of the Media and Communications Branch.

Requirements

Superb writing and editing skills, including a strong understanding of online storytelling, as well as a strong fact-checking and copy-editing background
Either advanced university degree in Journalism, Communications,  International Development or similar field, or equivalent work experience
Preferred at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in news reporting, journalistic writing, editing or communications. Preferred at least 3 years spent at the international level;
Knowledge of web development, with grasp of design basics and an understanding of modern web standards, communication principles and social media platforms;
Knowledge of international development issues;
Fluency in English, with excellent drafting abilities and editorial skills required;
Knowledge of another UN language (French or Spanish) is an asset
