Position Summary:

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the UNFPA Representative, the Media and Communication Specialist will provide and advice on all aspects of Media and Communication work for Myanmar Country Office, with a special focus on communication and outreach initiatives related primarily to Myanmar National Population and Housing Census Project, humanitarian and post conflict support in a highly complex and rapidly evolving country context.

The Media and Communication Specialist will be accountable for designing, updating, managing, coordinating, implementing and monitoring the communication strategy for country programme. This requires a special focus on a high-profile  national population and housing census, the first one conducted in 30 years in the context of   rapid change in the country to democracy, open markets, a new socio-political environment and  a peace process after almost 60 years of closed military rule.

S/he will be leading and managing the communication unit team, which implements the production and activities to promote awareness and understanding for UNFPA’s mission and various types of country programme activities in Myanmar.

Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:

• Advanced university degree in mass communications, public relations or journalism or other related field. 

Knowledge and Experience:

• At least 5 years of increasingly responsible professional international experience in communications.
• Ability to develop approaches and materials to be shared with partners and donors to help emphasize the importance of supporting access to reliable and credible census data in both development, including messaging on highly conflict sensitive and human rights protection and safeguarding issues;
• Demonstrated experience implementing visibility communications or media projects;
• Demonstrated experience working with spokespersons and building strategic partnerships with the private sector;
• Excellent writing and editing skills, with strong analytical and research skills required;
• Thorough knowledge of web production, social media and multimedia tools;
• Excellent interpersonal communication and project implementation skills required;
• Direct newsroom reporting or public relations experience is valuable.

Languages:

• Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of another official UN language is desirable
