Job Setting:
The Regional Programme Specialist post is located in the East and Southern Africa Regional Office in Johannesburg, South Africa. S/he reports directly to the Deputy Regional Director who provides overall leadership. S/He is heading the Programme Coordination Unit and is the principal programme focal point in the Regional Office for integrated technical and programme advice, providing country offices and the regional programme with guidance, assistance and support on all programme issues. The Programme Specialist contributes to the coordination of a team accountable for integrated programme, operations and technical support within a systems strengthening approach which is fundamental to UNFPA’s overall strategy.
Job Purpose:
The Regional Programme Specialist provides strategic programming support and coordination to ensure that the Fund’s programmes in the region are firmly placed in the context of the ICPD Programme of Action; the global Agenda 2030 and the continental Agenda 2063; national development plans and frameworks; and UN Reform frameworks and processes. S/he monitors country level integrated technical, programmatic and operational support needs and progress and provides feedback to the relevant Regional Office Advisers and Specialists.
Education:
- Post-graduate University Degree or equivalent in public health, medicine, sociology, demography, gender, economics, international relations, international development, public administration, management or other related field.
Knowledge and Experience:
- 7 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in programme management and development relevant to UNFPA’s mandate;
- Substantive knowledge and practical experience in sexual and reproductive health, youth and adolescent issues, population dynamics and data, and gender equality and women’s empowerment as well as in results-based programme development, innovation and marketing of new approaches;
- UN inter-agency experience in a strong asset; and
- Field experience is required.
Languages:
- Fluency in English required; working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese is an asset.
