Background
The global Campaign to End Fistula is an integral component of UNFPA’s overall strategy to improve maternal health and ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and the protection of reproductive rights. It includes interventions to prevent fistula, treat affected women & rehabilitate//follow up/help those who have undergone treatment return to full, productive lives. Since 2003 the Campaign has supported over 47,000 fistula repairs, and its activities are based on three key strategies: prevention, treatment, and social reintegration. The Campaign’s three strategic intervention points are designed to situate fistula in national maternal health/SRH strategies, and in UNFPA country programmes.
Job setting
The Technical Specialist for Sexual Reproductive Health(SRH)/Obstetric Fistula is located in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch (SRHB) of the Technical Division (TD), and reports directly to the Chief of SRHB who provides overall strategic direction. S/he works with interdisciplinary Teams within the SRH Branch, and liaises with other technical and programme staff across TD, Programme Division, the Media and Communications Branch, the Information and External Relations Division, Regional Offices (ROs) and Country Offices (COs). S/he will also liaise with external private and public partners.
Job Purpose
The Technical Specialist provides technical and programmatic leadership in terms of UNFPA policy and strategy related to the Campaign to End Fistula, and contributes to policy making and strategies related to sexual and reproductive/maternal health and their inclusion in the global development agenda. The target for achieving fistula elimination is in line with ICPD and MDG targets, as well as the post-2015 agenda.
The primary duties/responsibilities are:
A. Increase effectiveness & efficiency in technical and programmatic activities delivered by Technical Division (TD) through Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)
B. Contribute to integrated field support including through the RH and Adolescent and Youth Clusters
C. Promote innovation and creativity
D. Lead & communicate change
E. Evidence and knowledge development and dissemination
F. Effective management
Education:
Advanced university degree in Public Health or Social Science.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Seven years of experience in the area of international development including public health, including sexual and reproductive health, preferably in Obstetric Fistula;
- Field experience;
- Knowledge of the United Nations system an asset;
- Fluency in English and in French is required.
