Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
•Content Development
o Provides overall editorial direction for the global and regional web sites; edits, organizes and structures content for global web site, maintaining a consistent voice and style; revises material based on feedback from UNFPA branches; oversees the posting of content, including insertion of appropriate links, graphics, videos and appropriate layering; advises on the design and execution of animated graphics or other multimedia features to add texture and interest to the modules, and obtains final clearances.
o Conceptualizes, writes and collaborates on the production of multimedia resources.
o Works with experts and focal points in relevant branches to develop and regularly update content of the web site.
o Collaborates with the Web Manager on the structure and creative direction of new web sites
• Planning, Editing and Oversight
o Commissions, edits feature stories from the field that position UNFPA strongly around key issues. Provides direction and guidance, reviews and edits inputs for accuracy, balance, United Nations/UNFPA style consistency and conformity with professional journalistic standards. Writes headlines and selects and captions photographs.
o Decides on the packaging and presentation of information based on the strategic plan and communications strategy, as well as analysis of political/cultural/ regional balance, journalistic standards, UNFPA priorities and web traffic reports.
o Ensures alignment of web content with UNFPA's 'voice', messaging, strategic direction,style and public relations strategies, paying particular attention to sensitive issues.
o Advises UNFPA communications focal points on how to get material posted on the global web site.
o Advises on the need for translation of key materials.
• Reportage
o With guidance from Branch Chief, the Senior Editor or Media Adviser, commissions and edits web stories or web logs based on activities at headquarters, including high-level meetings, workshops and presentations.
o On occasion, provides in-depth, on-site reporting to give higher visibility to important initiatives in the field, including high-level international meetings, through daily dispatches, interviews and photographs.
Qualifications and Expertise:
● Superb writing and editing skills, including a strong understanding of online storytelling and news, as well as a strong fact-checking and copy-editing background
● Either advanced university degree in Journalism, Communications, International Development or similar field, or equivalent work experience
● Preferred at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in news reporting, journalistic writing, editing or communications. Preferred at least 3 years spent at the international level;
● Knowledge of web development, with grasp of design basics and an understanding of modern web standards, communication principles and social media platforms;
● Knowledge of international development issues;
● Fluency in English with excellent drafting abilities and editorial skills required;
● Knowledge of another UN language (French or Spanish) is an asset.
