UNITED NATIONS, New York — United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director (Management) of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.

Ms. Albrectsen brings to UNFPA nearly 20 years of development and managerial experience, having held leadership positions in the Danish Government and previously in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNFPA.

In her current position as Ambassador and Under-Secretary-General for Management in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Albrectsen directs global management services for 2,800 staff and operates with an annual budget of $3 billion. She also comes with a strong background in development work. She served with UNDP from 1997 to 2004, first as Deputy Resident Representative in Indonesia and later as Director and Management Adviser in the Administrator’s Office at UNDP Headquarters. She has direct knowledge of UNFPA’s mandate and areas of work, having served from 2004-2006 as UNFPA Representative in Türkiye and Country Director for Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Ms. Albrectsen, a Danish national, holds a Master of Science degree in Law from the University of Copenhagen.
