Nine multimedia e-learning modules on key maternal and newborn life-saving skills and family planning were developed under the UNFPA/Intel/Jhpiego partnership in 2013.

These include modules on:
• Managing Post-partum Hemorrhage
• Managing Pre-Eclampsia and Eclampsia
• Managing Post Abortion Care
• Managing Puerperal Sepsis
• Managing Prolonged and Obstructed Labor
• Bleeding after Birth for Frontline Health Workers
• Family Planning for Frontline Health Workers
• Danger Signs in Pregnancy
• Essential Newborn Care

These innovative, interactive, multi-media e-modules – with built-in assessments – provide training on all major basic emergency obstetric and newborn care and family planning skills for frontline healthcare workers.

Utilizing Intel’s SKOOL technology (which is free of charge) these modules do not require an internet connection and can be accessed at any time, anywhere, via low-cost laptops or netbooks that health workers will be trained to use.

The modules use case studies to walk the user through real-life normal and emergency situations that can arise during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period, promoting the competent clinical practice necessary to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. These modules have been reviewed and endorsed by major professional bodies, including WHO, FIGO, ICM and ICN. They can be translated into any language and the graphics can also be adapted to suit local socio-cultural contexts.

Over 400 midwives were trained to use these modules in 2013-14 at major global conferences and in countries including in Afghanistan, Ghana, India, Lesotho and Zambia. Two pilots in Ghana and Bangladesh are underway, and road maps have been developed to roll out the e-Learning implementation. The Ministry of Health in Ghana has agreed to adopt these global modules and an initial pilot training was organized at 10 pre-service midwifery schools and two regional hospitals in 2013.

Over 1,700 students have so far used these modules in Ghana alone. In Bangladesh, the preparatory groundwork on localization of the e-modules is well underway, and the programme ICT4RH will be operationalized in 2014.
