Humanitarian partners continue to assist people affected by inter-communal violence between Massalit and Arab tribespeople in and around El Geneina town, where a dispute in Krinding IDP camp (approx. 3 km east of El Geneina) on 28 December 2019, fueled a series of incidents and killed 54 people and injured 60.

Since 28 December 2019, a dispute between Massalit and Arab tribesmen in Krinding displacement camp (about 3 km east of El Geneina), has fueled a series of incidents and increased tensions in and around El Geneina, West Darfur, resulting in widespread internal displacement.

Over the next 4 to 7 days, UNFPA will deploy a team of reproductive health specialists and experts in preventing/responding to gender-based violence to El Geneina to coordinate humanitarian responses in these areas.

Sudan Humanitarian Emergency

The October 2021 military takeover, with renewed violence between security forces and armed groups, threatens the anticipated socioeconomic recovery in Sudan. The situation is hampering access to essential services and is likely to exacerbate internal displacement. The country also hosts a large refugee population. UNFPA is helping women and girls access reproductive health and gender-based violence services.
