The nine case studies presented in this brochure are drawn from a longer UNFPA report entitled, "Culture Matters: Working with Communities and Faith-based Organizations". It highlights the necessity of mainstreaming cultural analysis and sensitivity in development efforts addressing issues such as gender equality and equity, HIV/AIDS, female genital cutting, gender-based violence and reproductive health. Programmes in Brazil, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Uganda and Yemen are analyzed.

Building the future now

Participants talked about the importance of UNFPA-supported thematic funds—the Global Programme to Enhance Reproductive Health Commodity Security (GPRHCS), the Maternal Health Thematic Trust Fund (MTHF), the Unified Budget and Results Accountability Framework (UBRAF), and the UNFPA/UNICEF Joint Programme on FGM/C—at national level. Country-focused approaches, quick response and support were mentioned as important assets leading to positive changes in the area of health.
