A new commitment from the Government of New Zealand will provide NZ$ 18 million over three years to UNFPA’s core resources.

The agreement was signed on 28 March 2019 at UNFPA Headquarters in New York, during a meeting between Craig Hawke, Permanent Representative of New Zealand to the United Nations, and UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem.

Core resources provide stable, predictable and flexible funding for UNFPA. They are critical for the organization’s ability to plan effectively to meet the needs of women and girls worldwide, and respond quickly to emerging challenges and rapidly changing circumstances.

New Zealand has been a longstanding political and financial partner of UNFPA, having provided multi-year core funding since 2014. In 2018, the Government’s contributions to UNFPA core resources reached US$ 5.2 million, ranking fourth in terms of core funding contributions per capita among donors providing multi-year core funding. New Zealand also made additional contributions to support for humanitarian operations among Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

For UNFPA, the partnership with New Zealand has been key to its ongoing endeavour, in collaboration with United Nations sister agencies and other partners, to deliver essential services that advance the human rights of women and girls in the Pacific sub-region.
