Nearly 100,000 Ukrainian refugees have crossed the border into Moldova since the beginning of the conflict.

About half of them are currently remaining in Moldova. Most of the refugees are women with children, and older persons.

UNFPA donated dignity kits to support women with their basic hygiene and sanitary needs. UNFPA also provided information on reproductive health services and referred pregnant women to medical care units.

The refugees are placed all over the country in placement centers. The Center for refugees at the Football Club “Zimbru” in Chisinau is one of such centers, offering sanitary facilities and meals. At the time UNFPA visited the center, there were two pregnant women among the refugees.

An estimated 80,000 Ukrainian women will give birth in the next three months – many of them without access to critical maternal health care. For some, childbirth will be a life-threatening rather than a life-changing experience.

The impacts of the hostilities are being felt across the region. More than 1 million people have fled, seeking refuge in neighbouring countries including Poland, the Republic of Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania in addition to other European countries.
