Better Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for All in Indonesia (BERANI II)

The Better Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for All in Indonesia Phase II joint programme, also known as BERANI II, builds on the achievements of Phase I of the project to further address critical gaps in sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and youth in Indonesia. Despite progress in gender equality, persistent challenges, such as high maternal mortality, gender-based violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation, continue to hinder women’s health and rights. Deeply rooted gender norms further reinforce these barriers.

Funded by the Government of Canada, this initiative expands its reach, particularly in Eastern Indonesia and urban areas, to enhance comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health and rights services. UNFPA, UN Women, and UNICEF combine their expertise in partnership with national government institutions, civil society, religious leaders, and the private sector. This programme will run from 2023 to 2027 and will directly benefit 14,000 individuals, including 7,000 women and girls, across 14 provinces in Indonesia.

Key objectives of this programme include:

  • Improving sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender-based violence services which will be achieved through training of teachers, health providers, midwives as well as health, justice and social providers;
  • Empowering communities by engaging youth, women, couples, and community leaders in gender-based violence prevention, financial skills training and positive parenting;
  • Strengthening policies concerning sexual and reproductive health and rights and eliminating gender-based violence and harmful practices for women and girls by supporting government bodies in evidence-based policymaking and gender-responsive budgeting.

By investing in education, services, and policy reforms, BERANI II aims to create a future where all women and girls in Indonesia can exercise their right to health, safety, and equality.
