Establishment of the Harmonized National Management Information System (HNMIS)

Funded by the European Commission, UNFPA and UNDP combine their expertise in partnership with Malawi’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs (Department of Economic Planning and Development) to establish and operationalize the Harmonized National Management Information System. Running from 2024 to 2027, the initiative will improve how data is collected, analyzed, and used to support evidence-based planning, decision-making, and reporting at all levels of government.

The Harmonized National Management Information System is designed to tackle longstanding challenges in Malawi’s data ecosystem: low demand for data in policymaking, limited supply of high-quality data, and underdeveloped ICT infrastructure, impacting effective monitoring and evaluation of development strategies. By addressing these gaps, the project will strengthen governance, promote transparency, and enhance the country’s ability to monitor progress on national development goals and global commitments like the Sustainable Development Goals.

The project focuses on developing the Information System and its Standard Operating Procedures, building capacity, strengthening coordination, integrating systems, and aligning strategies across sectors. Ultimately, the Harmonized National Management Information System will help Malawi make smarter, more efficient use of its resources, benefiting its people and future development.
