Improving the Health of Women and Children in Kosovo

The Improving Health of Women and Children in Kosovo joint programme worked to strengthen Kosovo’s health care system to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health.

The project, which ran from 2007 to 2011, brought together the complementary expertise of UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO, working in partnership with government, health professional organizations, and international and local NGOs. A second phase was completed in 2016.

It worked to increase access to health services, especially for pregnant women and newborns, and improve their quality, in the areas of maternal health, sexual and reproductive health, child care and development and nutrition. The project aimed to build the capacity of health workers, while also enhancing knowledge and changing community practices relating to reproductive health and boosting support for family planning among women, men and young people. At the same time, it supported the government in developing its capacities to strengthen the health system.
